Watch Description
It was in 1959 that Seiko’s first Alpinist watch was introduced to meet the needs of mountain climbers and recreational field sports enthusiasts. From the start, it was well received and, over the ensuing decades, its reputation spread far beyond the Japanese market for which it was first intended. Remarkably, it was the first Seiko watch ever produced with sports in mind and it blazed a trail that led to the development of many landmark timepieces and timing devices for sports, from stopwatches to diver’s watches, in the decades that followed. While its core character has remained unchanged, its design has evolved over time. Today, the first Alpinist watch from 1959 is re-born in a re-creation that has the high functionality that characterizes the Prospex collection, whose very existence owes so much to the first 1959 Alpinist.
Prospex Alpinist. The first Seiko sport watch — elegant, yet rugged and superbly functional — the Laurel Alpinist is reimagined in this distinctive watch, designed to celebrate the beginnings of Seiko's rise to the forefront of high-intensity timekeeping. Styled to fit contemporary tastes while evoking a vintage feel, this exceptional watch is as smooth and refined as the prized original, but far more powerful. With the original's mountain-shaped markers at 12, 6 and 9 ensuring legibility while referring to its mountaineering inspiration, this versatile design features a green dial with date calendar and LumiBrite hands and markers, as well a curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The 24-jewel automatic movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, with a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and can be wound manually or automatically. Crafted of stainless steel, with screwdown crown see-through caseback, black cordovan leather strap and tri-fold push button release clasp. 20 bar, 200M Water Resistant

## Overall Watch Rating: 6.9/10.0
**Material Metric (9.2/10.0)** - Robust stainless steel construction paired with a highly scratch-resistant box-shaped sapphire crystal delivers protection on par with much pricier Tudor Rangers.
**Dials & Design Metric (9.0/10.0)** - The textured green sunburst dial, bold lume-filled indices, and vintage cathedral hands offer exceptional legibility and aesthetic appeal comparable to Grand Seiko field watches.
**Versatility Metric (8.8/10.0)** - Excels as a do-it-all adventure companion from hiking trails to underwater exploration, matching the multi-scenario prowess of the Omega Seamaster 300.
**History & Innovation Metric (8.2/10.0)** - Rooted in Seiko's pioneering 1959 Alpinist legacy with modern upgrades like extended power reserve, it stands alongside iconic reissues like the Rolex Explorer 16570.
**Movement Metric (7.2/10.0)** - The 6R35 automatic provides solid reliability, hand-winding, hacking, and 70-hour reserve akin to ETA 2824 workhorses in Hamilton Khakis.
**Functions Metric (6.8/10.0)** - Core timekeeping with date and strong water resistance performs steadily like Citizen Promasters but lacks advanced utility.
**Brand Metric (5.3/10.0)** - Seiko's Prospex line offers dependable mid-tier quality elevated by enthusiast appeal, similar to Oris divers.
**Complications Metric (4.0/10.0)** - Simple date window adds basic utility on level with entry-level Tissot Le Locle models.
**Rarity Metric (3.7/10.0)** - Common production at accessible pricing mirrors mass-appeal Seiko SKX divers rather than limited Nomos editions.
## Total Performance Score (TPS): 9.9
## WM Collector Grade: A+
## Performance Insights: Excels in material quality, design aesthetics, versatility, and historical significance while rarity lags, delivering outstanding value far exceeding its sub-$1,000 price.
## TPS Interpretation: Exceptional Value: The watch vastly overdelivers on premium features, build, and style, justifying a significantly higher market price.
